Stillwaters: Ponds, Lakes,Wetlands, Water gardens

Our stillwater projects are diverse and range from small community school ponds to the creation of sizeable farm ponds for water storage, domestic water garden features, dam repairs, stew pond conversions and the restoration of Scheduled Ancient Monuments such as the Norman Mott & Bailey at Sherrington in 2015 in consultation with Historic England. Similar restoration work was successfully carried out on behalf of Natural England and the landowner on the eroding decoy pond at Abbotsbury Swannery in Dorset.

Another recent assignment involved the utilisation of a spring-fed land drain to create a unique feature of five pools cascading down a steep woodland escarpment. We have an in-depth understanding of the practical and technical issues arising from working with ponds, lakes and wetlands including:

  • Aquifers and Groundwater
  • Water Level Management
  • Wetland Plant species
  • Infrastructure repair & construction
  • Off-line water vole habitat

We also provide advice and repair services for earth dam embankments, Mill leats and water control structures.

NB: ┬áCain Bio-engineering first created ponds as part of a major river restoration and garden landscaping scheme in 1989 on the river Wylye at Ballington in Wiltshire. Since then we’ve created dozens of pond habitats, off-line lagoons and backwaters as a by-product of river restoration schemes. One of these ponds can be seen in the following video:
